With “Freedom Day” upon us, the seaside town of Whitby is ready to welcome visitors to the Yorkshire Coast. Whether you’re passing through or here for the long haul, make sure you add these Whitby summer events to your calendar.
Whitby Regatta
After a year off in 2020, the 181st Whitby Regatta is back with a bang this year between 20th and 23rd August. The event promises a “full weekend of entertainment”, including rowing races, yacht racing, prize presentations and a large firework display.
Races kick off from Friday 20th August, while the fireworks will be available to view from 9:45pm on Monday 23rd August. And it’s not just about the boats – take the kids to enjoy motorcycle rallies and displays, as well as fun fairs and fancy-dress competitions.
Whitby War Weekend
If you’re a bit of a history buff, you can’t afford to miss Whitby’s War Weekend between Saturday 28th and Monday 30th August. This action-packed weekend features battle re-enactments, living history displays, tank rides, military vehicle exhibits, musical entertainment and much more.
The event will take you back through the annals of history, covering everything from the Vikings to the American and Spanish Civil Wars, the Vietnam War and WWII. You’ll find it all in the heart of Whitby, next to Whitby Abbey.
Unmissable music
The renowned Whitby Folk Week is sadly not going ahead in its traditional format this year – but you can still join in on the festivities online from Saturday 21st August.
Looking for the live experience? You’ll be pleased to hear that some fantastic musical acts are coming to Whitby this summer. On Sunday 15th August, The Beardy Busker will be taking to Whitby Way with some of your favourite hit covers.
No tribute act comes more giant than Tina Turner – with this homage bringing down the house at Whitby Pavilion on Friday 20th August. And if you want to blend your history with your art, come back in September for the History of Rock at Whitby Pavilion on Friday 3rd.
Kick back at the White Horse and Griffin
